You only have to <\/span>take a look at virtual office history<\/span><\/a> to realize that we\u2019ve come a long way since its humble beginnings stretching all the way back to the 1960s when the first serviced office company was created. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back then, workplaces were simple bricks and mortar buildings designed as permanent spaces in which to work and hold meetings. Today, the office is a different beast altogether: it is driven by technology that is shaping the future of work.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workplace trends<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Nowadays, as I learned at a recent <\/span>Technology and Trends<\/span><\/a> conference, a workspaces\u2019 physical design is informed, first and foremost, by technology. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is particularly true when it comes to videoconferencing technology, which is proving more popular than ever as workforces become more disparate and flexible.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tech like sound masking, localized microphones and all the features associated with smart buildings are changing the landscape of workspaces – making them more responsive, reactive, attuned to occupants\u2019 behaviours. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two of the latest and most talked about tech trends to affect the workplace are virtual reality and augmented reality. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before we explore what VR and augmented reality in the workplace might look like, let\u2019s define each term and establish how they\u2019re different.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtual Reality<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you consider what the words \u2018virtual\u2019 and \u2018reality\u2019 mean in isolation, you\u2019ll quickly realize that together, they equate to something along the lines of \u2018near-reality\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, according to the <\/span>Virtual Reality Society<\/span><\/a>, \u201cVR presents us with a version of reality that isn\u2019t really there, but from your perspective it would be perceived as real.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In technical terms, VR is \u201ca term used to describe a three-dimensional, computer-generated environment which can be explored and interacted with by a person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Augmented Reality<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although they\u2019re part of the same family so to speak, augmented reality differs from VR in the sense that it <\/span>adds <\/span><\/i>to the world you see in front of you, it doesn\u2019t replace it. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An example of AR in a popular culture context is Pokemon Go, where users see characters navigating their immediate surroundings through their smartphone.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
