More than one-in-three working Americans (35%) are Millennials, which makes them the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/04\/11\/millennials-largest-generation-us-labor-force\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">largest generation<\/a> in the U.S. labor force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while claims that Millennials are set to make up 75% of the workforce by 2025 are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/millennials-75-workforce-2025-ever-anita-lettink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">disputed<\/a> (rightly so, as it\u2019s hard to believe that the remaining three generations will account for just 25% of the workforce), Millennials still hold the workplace majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given their sheer dominance, it\u2019s no wonder employers are eager to understand what motivates Millennials in the workplace. It\u2019s the key to attracting and retaining the best talent of those born between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/01\/17\/where-millennials-end-and-generation-z-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">1981 and 1996<\/a>. Or in other words, those who are currently aged from 24 to 39 1980 and 2000 (as of 2020).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what do Millennials want from the workplace? Work and lifestyle balance:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies on Millennials in the workplace, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/global\/en\/pages\/about-deloitte\/articles\/millennialsurvey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Deloitte Global Millennial Survey 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, show that this age group still want to earn high salaries and be wealthy like their predecessors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But their priorities have shifted, and workplace culture and experiences are more valuable to them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Copy-of-Benefits-of-Using-a-Virtual-Office-For-Business-12.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Copy-of-Benefits-of-Using-a-Virtual-Office-For-Business-12.png 250w, https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Copy-of-Benefits-of-Using-a-Virtual-Office-For-Business-12-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deloitte found that travel and seeing the world was at the top of 57% of Millennials\u2019 list of aspirations. COVID-19 may have put the brakes on their ability to travel &#8212; but only temporarily. Furthermore, 46% of Millennials are more attracted to making a positive impact in their communities or society than in having children and starting families (39%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report states:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGenerally, millennials think their ambitions are achievable. But for many, their dreams have been delayed by financial or other constraints.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Work flexibility and freedom:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The desire to work flexibly and move away from rigid 9-5 structures shows that the Millennial workforce value workplace freedom and flexibility much more than previous generations.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Copy-of-Benefits-of-Using-a-Virtual-Office-For-Business-13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Copy-of-Benefits-of-Using-a-Virtual-Office-For-Business-13.png 250w, https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Copy-of-Benefits-of-Using-a-Virtual-Office-For-Business-13-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/markhall\/2017\/11\/08\/what-the-ideal-workplace-of-the-future-looks-like-according-to-millennials\/#252782442284#35a804ed4228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earlier study from Deloitte<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2016) found that nearly 75% of Millennials in the workplace place importance on a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/how-to-work-from-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">work from home<\/a>\u201d or \u201cwork remotely\u201d policy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that we\u2019re experiencing the world\u2019s biggest home-working experiment, how does that research hold up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitalitygroup.com\/insights\/vitality-pulse-insights-assessing-vitality-workplaces-time-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">research<\/a> from Vitality Group, a health and wellness firm, COVID-19 is taking its toll on the world\u2019s largest generation. While working remotely during the health crisis, 1 in 3 Millennials are reporting lower productivity than usual, and around 25% are feeling a decreased employer connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore it\u2019s important for employers to provide an environment where people feel valued and trusted, and to provide the flexibility and freedom to allow them to do their best work \u2014 whenever, and wherever \u2014 that may be.<\/span> We know that when planned and managed correctly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/tips-for-managing-a-remote-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">remote work can significantly improve productivity<\/a> and retention. During the current situation, it\u2019s mission-critical for leaders to provide the support and structure their Millennial workforce needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Opportunity for thrive:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to some opinions, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/08\/millennials-are-actually-workaholics-according-to-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials work hard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccl.org\/articles\/leading-effectively-articles\/how-to-keep-millennials-happy-without-ruining-your-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">decade-long study<\/a> by Jennifer Deal and Alec Levenson, \u2018What Millennials Want from Work\u2019, Millennials are committed and would prefer to do well within an organization, rather than leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that doesn\u2019t equate to blind loyalty. At least one third of Millennials are assessing the environment for better options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To keep the best Millennial talent, organizations should provide the right leadership and support, and focus on developing their skills for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while Millennials continue to adjust to the current situation, which often means working from home, it\u2019s important to prevent burnout by setting boundaries and reducing work overload, particularly while the line between work and home life is virtually nonexistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Leadership:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millennials want leadership and coaching, not authoritarian management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/248009\/millennials-good-business.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Gallup<\/a>, Millennials expect their managers to coach their performance and to value them as people and employees. That requires real relationships, not command-and-control management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our new world of remote work and virtual meetings, it\u2019s easy for brand culture and team cohesion to fall apart. It\u2019s no longer possible to lean over the desk and check in on a project or ask for advice. Tools and tech:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Widely known as \u2018digital natives\u2019, Millennials grew up with the Internet and saw massive improvements in mobile and wireless technology along the way.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases, the tech that Millennials have at home far exceeds the quality or performance of the tools they use at work, which is a significant obstacle to productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Millennials typically embrace technology as a means to do their work faster and more efficiently, working remotely can and does throw up connectivity issues.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore it\u2019s important for employers to invest in the right technology for their workforce &#8212; this is not necessarily the most hyped new product on the market, but the piece of equipment that best suits your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/42-remote-team-building-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">company culture and your team\u2019s requirements.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6098\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Do Millennials Value?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now we know how Millennials work and what makes them tick, what else do we know about this hard-working age group?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s important to Millennials?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the major milestones of this generation is the emergence of the \u2018sharing economy\u2019.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It reflects this demographic\u2019s reluctance to buy items when instead, they can share or subscribe to them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It impacts everything from homes and music to workspace.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This reduces the cost of acquiring and maintaining major goods, and often generates positive side effects; for instance, renting or sharing a home enables greater flexibility and the option to move quickly, should new career opportunities come up.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another example is shared workspace. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials who share workspace, often by subscribing to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/what-is-coworking-space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coworking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> membership, have the benefit of expanding their professional networks and business opportunities simply by tapping their coworkers\u2019 knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept of sharing has of course taken a hit during the pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millennials will be feeling this impact perhaps more than any other generation, as they have come to embrace the sharing economy and integrate it into their everyday lives. Sharing models have adapted as a result. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shared workspaces, for instance, have reduced capacity in their spaces, set up one-way systems, and made pre-booking of some spaces &#8212; such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/meeting-room-names-what-to-call-your-office-meeting-room\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">meeting rooms<\/a> or hot desks &#8212; mandatory. This allows for additional cleaning and sanitizing between occupiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/8-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6099\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/8-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/8.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Training and \u2018Upskilling\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials value the opportunity to train and gain new skills.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited availability of skills is a serious problem for companies, both now and for the future of work.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A report by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_Future_of_Jobs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">World Economic Forum<\/a> highlights the need to continually upskill the workforce as new technologies influence and change the way we work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe accelerating pace of technological, demographic and socio-economic disruption is transforming industries and business models, changing the skills that employers need and shortening the shelf-life of employees\u2019 existing skill sets in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why employers must continually invest in relevant training.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, upskilling and \u2018learnability\u2019 is an essential component of the future of work; it is an important piece of the workplace puzzle not just for Millennial employment, but also for the ongoing growth, and succession, of the companies that employ them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when it comes to the Millennial work environment, it\u2019s not just about having the skills to do their work&#8230;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also want purpose.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purpose and Accountability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many millennials consider themselves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.edu\/news\/most-millennials-will-only-work-for-purpose-driven-firms-1431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">purpose-driven<\/a>, and want to work for a company whose values reflect their own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, the pandemic appears to have reinforced their desire to help drive positive change in their communities. Around three-quarters of respondents to <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/global\/en\/pages\/about-deloitte\/articles\/millennialsurvey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Deloitte\u2019s Global Millennial Survey 2020<\/a> found that the pandemic has highlighted new issues and made them even more sympathetic toward the needs of others in their local communities and around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The majority have also, or plan to, take positive actions to improve their own lives and the lives of others in their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can We Create a Millennial-Friendly Workplace While Working Remotely?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A big concern for younger generations right now is working in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only does this lead to loneliness, stress and burnout, it also prevents younger workers from gaining access to the networks and knowledge they would naturally pick up in a workplace environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Innovation, creativity, and opportunities often come from chance encounters; the same goes for transfer of knowledge.
