In fact, many companies didn\u2019t even know what the word meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1998, eCommerce sales amounted to a total of $5 billion in the United States. In 2020, this number had risen to well over $800 billion \u2013 representing an increase of 16,000 percent. By 2021, that number had risen an additional 18%, reaching $933 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, we are on track to surpass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/content\/us-ecommerce-forecast-2021#:~:text=US%20consumers%20will%20spend%20%24933.30,growth%20rate%20seen%20since%202011.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$1 trillion in US eCommerce sales<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So how did we get from $5 billion to almost $1 trillion in the space of just 20 years?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a few factors worth considering, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inflation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The rise of Amazon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ease of online payment processing, shipping, and returns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The incredible variety offered by online stores<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The pandemic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The lower cost of operating an online store compared to a brick-and-mortar store<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New methods such as affiliate marketing and dropshipping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to reach more customers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excellent growth potential<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower startup costs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Was This All Caused by Covid?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we look at the statistics above, it seems clear that the pandemic sparked a major surge in online shopping.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While sales definitely increased during Covid-19, can we really say that the pandemic <em>alone<\/em> caused the exponential growth of this industry?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First of all, consider that while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/issue-briefs\/2022\/03\/how-covid-changed-the-way-city-governments-support-local-businesses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some industries experienced growth during Covid-19<\/a>, others experienced major declines. In these affected industries, sales slowed in both online <em>and<\/em> brick-and-mortar settings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An excellent example is the clothing industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because people didn\u2019t need to go to work anymore, they stopped purchasing office attire and other work clothing. In addition, they stopped buying high-quality, semi-formal attire for important social events.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/fashion-scoops\/coronavirus-sweatpants-fashion-trend-1203544111-1203544111\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sweatpant sales surged during the pandemic<\/a> as people worked from home and were quarantined.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, certain declines in product sales were universal, and it didn\u2019t matter whether these products were being sold online or in physical stores.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the pandemic did in fact cause more people to shop online \u2013 including those who previously preferred to shop in person. Many consumers were actually <em>forced<\/em> to try out new brands and new shopping methods due to supply chain issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps more importantly, most of the people who tried out online shopping methods during the pandemic say that they will <em>continue<\/em> to use these methods in the future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while Covid-19 certainly played a major role in rising eCommerce sales within the past few years, the truth is that we\u2019re looking at a larger trend that was already taking place prior to the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, the data seems to suggest that the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.miva.com\/the-history-of-ecommerce-how-did-it-all-begin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most pivotal moments in eCommerce history<\/a> occurred during the late 90s and early 2000s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These were the years in which Amazon, eBay, and other giants consolidated their positions on the web and made it easier than ever for consumers to purchase whatever they wanted online.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">eCommerce is hardly anything new, and it has been around for well over three decades.
