It can become more difficult to take the leap as you get more embedded into the life of working for someone else.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But things are changing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cgreat pause\u201d created by the pandemic gave workers time to reflect on what they really want out of life.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More workers are letting go of the idea of working for an organization that does not give them the flexibility and purpose they want. Some workers realize the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/freelancer-or-business-owner-which-is-best-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> flexibility of being an independent freelance<\/a>r is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancevirtualoffices.com\/virtual-office-blog\/one-third-of-the-u-s-workforce-is-freelancing-heres-how-to-differentiate-your-solo-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worth losing some of the \u201cstability\u201d that comes with working full-time for one company.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you are one of these people &#8212; someone who works for themselves &#8212; congratulations!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the major challenges of not having a boss is learning how to be a good manager of your working life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-employed workers, sole proprietors, independent contractors, and small business owners of many variations all have to manage their productivity, work-life balance, and keep their motivation charged up &#8212; without a boss there to remind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you probably won\u2019t miss those quarterly and annual performance reviews, you still want your business to be successful, right? Otherwise, what\u2019s the point?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s going to be hard to make that a reality if your motivation is lacking or your productivity is inconsistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you work for yourself, you don\u2019t have someone to hold you directly accountable. There will be challenges and no one will be there to guide you along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be in command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you work for an individual or organization, you are often given a set of expectations, guidelines, and a framework to follow to do your work effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with your job title and payment, most workers can usually expect something else that comes packaged with the traditional work arrangement:<em> a boss.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contemporary \u201cboss\u201d in the corporate world is often parodied in a negative light &#8212; at least in movies like <em>Office Space<\/em> or the sitcom <em>The Office.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drunk on power and totally incompetent, these caricatures roam the hallways of corporate offices searching for prey: a new employee to intimidate, a different worker to show favoritism, someone else to terminate for no reason at all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While these types of bosses certainly exist, let\u2019s hope most of them are being rapidly eradicated from the working world forever. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/news\/story\/hats-off-to-the-boss-5591794\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Many workers have had wonderful bosses at one time or another.<\/a> Their bosses (or managers, supervisors, directors, superiors, et al)&nbsp; were inspirational leaders that shared best practices, valuable experience, and mentorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Negative stereotypes aside, there is value in having someone there to hold you accountable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a world of mass distraction, procrastination can keep the most assiduous workers from accomplishing goals on time, meeting deadlines, and succeeding on the job. Be good to yourself &#8212; and be productive at the same time. Balance is necessary. Take breaks.
